Development of a Microalgae-Based Continuous Starch-to-Hydrogen Conversion Approach

Eukaryotic algae represent a highly heterogeneous group in terms of organization, lifestyle, and metabolic capabilities. Unicellular green microalgae are capable biohydrogen production through direct indirect photolysis as well dark fermentation. Most hydrogen studies focus on axenic algal cultures, although these difficult expensive to maintain for continuous operation. Moreover, the complex interplays fluxes between bacteria natural ecosystems provide number clear biological technological benefits large-scale functional algae-based systems. Two species from Chlamydomonas Chlorella genera were used engineer stable synthetic communities by incorporating starch-degrading bacterium Bacillus genus into inter-kingdom consortium. Continuous photoheterotrophic was achieved elaborating an appropriate algal–bacterial ratio fine-tuning culture conditions consortia. Medium with starch only carbon source served simple model cheap substrate generation. The engineered pairwise associations showed increased biomass yield compared control conditions. sp. MACC-360 produced significantly higher amount when both partner added media algae. Continuous, elevated supplemented 8 g L?1 sole carefully selected initial cell values MACC-360–B. amlyloliquefaciens co-cultures.
